Signs of an Aggressive Dog

b2ap3_thumbnail_aggressive-dog-DuPage-County.jpgDogs who exhibit aggressive behaviors are more likely to bite. If you find yourself around dogs, it is important to understand the signs so that you can take precautions if you believe a dog is dangerous. Additionally, many victims of dog bites are children; therefore, it is important for parents to be aware of signs of aggression in dogs.

Still, an understanding of the warning signs can still result in dog bites. In many cases, dog bites are not the fault of the victims under the law. Because the law favors dog bite victims, they often can be compensated for their injuries.

Signs of Aggressive Behaviors in Dogs

Experts warn of the following behaviors. If your dog shows these behaviors, you should seek professional help for your dog. If you are around a dog with these behaviors, it is advisable to leave the area to avoid an accident.

Aggressive behaviors include the following:

  • Becoming still and rigid;
  • Guttural barking;
  • Lunging or charging toward a person, even if there is no contact;
  • Punching a person with the dog’s nose;
  • Growling;
  • Showing gums and teeth;
  • Snapping; and
  • Nipping that leaves no marks.

These types of behaviors can lead to biting that cause serious injury.

About Dog Bite Cases in Illinois

Under Illinois law, a dog bite victim will be entitled to monetary recovery if he or she can prove that:

  1. The dog was not provoked;
  2. The victim was peaceably conducting herself or himself; and
  3. The victim was lawfully in the place where the attack occurred.

The law does not require that it be proven that the dog was a known danger or that the dog owner took steps to restrain the dog. Because of the proof required by law, dog bite victims may have an easier time recovering damages than victims in other types of personal injury cases.

However, in other cases, there may be a question as to one of the three requirements listed above. In these circumstances, an attorney can be especially useful.

Damages to Which You May Be Entitled in a Dog Bite Case

Attorneys are also useful in determining the damages victims may recover. Typically, victims can recover: medical expenses, lost wages, counseling expenses, emotional distress, and pain and suffering.
