Dawn Brown, 44, was found dead by her husband in her home on November 12, reports the Chicago Tribune. She was killed by a dog she had taken in a week ago from a family member. According to the autopsy report, Brown died from dog bites to her neck from a 140-pound mastiff. The couple has two other dogs, a boxer and a pit bull, but they were not part of the attack. Dog attacks that cause the death of an adult do not happen often. Dog bites are fairly common, however, they rarely result in death. Sometimes, a dog starts feeling territorial or the dog develops a predatory instinct and becomes aggressive, according to the experts. Aggression can span all breeds, but has more to do with the individual animal. Brown worked as a full time firefighter paramedic with the Bristol Kendall Fire Protection District in Yorkville. The couple were animal lovers who treated all their dogs very well. The mastiff did not get along with one of the other dogs, but other than that the mastiff was not known to be aggressive. "We're really having a hard time getting our heads around this," said Bristol Kendall Chief Michael Hitzemann. Dog bites can lead to severe injuries or even fatalities. Illinois law says that a dog owner is liable for injuries that his or her animal causes to others. If you or a loved one has been bitten by a dog, you may be entitled for compensation. An experienced lawyer can make all the difference in winning your case. Contact a skilled injury attorney in Illinois today.
