Drunk Driver Crashes Into Garage
Michael D. Karwoske, a 36-year-old man from Bolingbrook, "faces a charge of driving under the influence and citations including improper lane usage, diving too fast for conditions, and operating an uninsured motor vehicle," after a crash in late October, according to the Chicago Tribune
. Karwoske was drunk when he crashed his van into a parked car and then through a home's garage early one morning, according to police. He lives near to where the accident occurred, meaning he was most likely on his way home from a big night out when he lost control of his vehicle. He was found standing in the front yard of the home with his van protruding through the homeowner's garage, according to Bolingbrook Police Lt. Mike Rompa.
The image of a car stuck into someone's home may seem like a scene out of an action film, but accidents like these are more common than one may think. According to MyFoxChicago
, Karwoske's incident wasn't the first time in the month of October that an accident like this occurred in the Greater Chicago area. Seventeen-year-old Anne Page was arrested in mid-October "for driving under the influence after crashing into a house in Glen Ellyn," according to MyFoxChicago. Page, however, fled the scene, and was subsequently cited for leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, and for making an improper turn.
Both of these incidents involved a driver who was cited for driving under the influence. According to DigitalJournal.com
, the "Illinois State Police made nearly 10,000 DUI arrests in 2011," while the Chicago Police Department made more than 3,000 DUI arrests. The number is staggering, but the number of DUI arrests across the state in 2011 is still less than one percent of the population.
