Drinking and Driving imageOn the morning of Saturday September 23rd, a teenage boy ran a stop sign and crashed his truck into another SUV. Luis Romo, 18, of the 100 block of Devonshire Circle, was behind the wheel of his Chevy Silverado when he came to the intersection of Hastings Street and Liberty Street. The Toyota Rav4 that was hit by Romo was carrying three men who were injured in the car accident. Around 1 am, Romo ran the stop sign while traveling on Hastings and t-boned the Toyota Rav4. Authorities said that the force of the crash caused the floor of the Rav4 to fall off the car. The SUV was spun around and ended up around 3 houses away from the site of the accident. The exhaust system of the Toyota ended up a half a block away from where the truck ended up crashed against a parked car. The three people in the Rav4 were taken to local hospitals with serious yet not life-threatening injuries after they were rescued from the vehicle. Romo's Silverado continued driving and ended up smashing into a chain link fence. Romo was extricated by the Jaws of Life from the wreckage and taken to Sherman Hospital in Elgin, where he had a blood alcohol content of .17, twice the legal limit. He was found to be in the possession of open containers of beer in his uninsured vehicle. Elgin Commander Glenn Theriault said that Romo was charged with two felony counts of aggravated DUI as well as a felony count of operating a vehicle without insurance and causing bodily harm. Car accidents can turn your life upside down by making you miss work or pay huge hospital bills for your care.
