Karli Casey, 20, was sentenced to 5 years in prison for aggravated driving under the influence of intoxicating compounds on January 9. Casey "huffed" the fumes of a cleaning product while driving which caused her to pass out. While unconscious, she crashed into another car and seriously injured its passengers and other people. Casey has to serve at least 85 percent of her sentence, not including the 257 days she has already been in jail. It was found in blood tests that she also had codeine, heroin and cocaine in her blood stream. "I want to apologize to the families of the victims," Casey said at the court hearing. "I'm sorry." The intoxicated Casey was driving at night on Northwest Highway near First Bank Drive when she passed out. She crashed into the other vehicle head-on, causing injuries to two passengers in her car and to an elderly woman and her son in the other car. The elderly woman was seriously hurt and was hospitalized for months. She now needs constant care. Her son suffered fractured ribs and also had to be hospitalized. A passenger in Casey's truck suffered a lacerated spleen, fractured pelvis and other injuries. It is not always possible to take into account every possible risk out there. Even if your own driving is impeccable, other drivers may be intoxicated or otherwise impaired. If you or a loved one has become injured in a traffic accident, you may be eligible for compensation.
