DuPage County Motorcycle Accident Injury LawyerRiding a motorcycle can be a great experience, but it can also be dangerous. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there were more than 5,000 motorcycle fatalities that occurred in the United States in 2017. Even if a wrongful death does not occur in a motorcycle accident, motorcyclists may experience several different types of injuries. The NHTSA also reports that there were roughly 89,000 motorcyclists injured in 2017. These injuries can range from minor to severe, depending on the circumstances of a crash, and they may include lacerations and cuts or spinal cord or brain damage. Listed below are a few more of the most common injuries that can occur in a motorcycle accident:

Injuries Stemming From Motorcycle Accidents

If you have been in a motorcycle accident, you know how serious these injuries can be. The severity of many motorcycle accident injuries can depend on what a person was wearing at the time of the accident. For example, a motorcyclist who was not wearing a helmet at the time of the impact will most likely suffer a more extreme head injury. Some other common injuries that can take place in a motorcycle accident include:

  • Road rash: This type of abrasive injury occurs when a person's skin comes into contact with the road. It can be the result of both minor and major motorcycle accidents, and it may be characterized as either a first, second or third-degree injury.

Getting into a traffic accident can be a frightening experience. For people who are in enclosed vehicles, such as cars or trucks, accidents can still be alarming, but for those who are involved in accidents when they are on a motorcycle, the injuries can be much more serious and even deadly. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), more than 5,000 motorcyclists were killed in traffic crashes in 2017. In Illinois alone, approximately 160 motorcyclists were killed and more than 2,500 were injured in crashes in 2017. Motorcycles pose an inherent danger to riders because of the lack of protection the vehicle provides compared to other vehicles. If you have suffered injuries in a motorcycle accident, here are a few steps you should take immediately following the crash:

  1. Check Yourself for Injuries and Call 911 if Needed

DuPage County motorcycle accident attorney, motorcycle accidents, personal injury claim, DUI, DUI accidentsIf you regularly ride a motorcycle in Lombard or elsewhere in DuPage County, or even if you regularly share the road with motorcyclists, it is probably obvious that bikers have less protection in the event of a motorcycle accident than do vehicle occupants. Motorcyclists do not have the protection of the automobile’s body, airbags, and other safety features that often come standard in many vehicles.

While numerous studies have analyzed motorcycle collisions and their severity, a recent report from U.S. News & World Report suggests that motorcycle crashes are actually costlier and deadlier than many researchers and safety advocates previously believed.

Significantly Higher Death Rates in Motorcycle Accidents

DuPage County personal injury attorney, motorcyclists and lane splittingSpring weather across the nation is luring out motorcyclists onto highways and roads. While some drivers may view motorcycles as a risk or menace on the road, most motorcyclists are law abiding enthusiasts who have chosen a motorcycle over a car for various reasons. Yet whatever the reason, drivers are still wise in being cautious of motorcyclists.

Cars and motorcycles are involved in accidents daily—accidents which can cause significant personal injuries to both motorcyclists and others, in addition to property damage. Moreover, motorcyclists who “lane split,” or travel between actual lanes, can be a risk to themselves and to other cars and drivers.

Data from the California Enhanced Motorcycle Collision Data Project reports that 997 collision-involved motorcyclists, out of 5,969, were lane-splitting at the time of their collision. And while lane splitting may be considered actually safer for a rider, there are those who flout the law and create danger for others.

The state of Illinois started a new initiative on July 13thwhich aims to take unsafe motorcyclists off of the roads. The scheme is termed “operation rogue rider” because it targets motorcyclists who dart between traffic, race over 100 mph, and speed on shoulders. Patrols will be set between Devon and Old Orchard Rd on the Edens Expressway. These roving watches might soon be expanded to the Dan Ryan Expressway and Interstate 57.

Authorities are claiming that they receive nightly calls about dangerous motorcyclists. Between Skokie and Lincolnwood, hundreds of complaints have been received from local residents. It’s not only other drivers that are noticing the dangers of motorcyclists. So far this year, the Chicago region has experienced 13 fatalities and 7 injuries in motorcycle crashes. That amounts to an 85% increase in fatalities and a 75% increase in injuries compared to the same period of time last year.

Any motorist that is found guilty of driving recklessly could face up to a year in prison and fines up to $2,500. “Motorcyclists have a simple choice in the matter — violated the law and face hefty fines and jail time, or abide by the law and ride safely,” acting Illinois State Police District Chicago Lt. Jeff Grendzinski said. “Our top priority is for motorists to get to their final destination safely, and by implementing this enforcement plan, we save lives and prevent driving fatalities.”
