truck accidents, DuPage County truck accident attorney, Illinois truck accident, truck wreck, truck drivers injuredWe often hear about the risks of drowsy driving when it comes to truck accidents in DuPage County and throughout the country. More specifically, given that semi-truck drivers tend to be on the road for long stretches of time, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has specific hours of service regulations designed to ensure that a truck driver is not behind the wheel for more than a certain number of consecutive hours during any single drive. Those regulations require truckers to take rest breaks at certain points in order to prevent truck crashes.

Yet the hours of service regulations do not take into account the hours a truck driver might spend behind the wheel in his or her own vehicle in order to reach the workplace—the location where the truck driver actually picks up the 18-wheeler and begins driving for pay. Can this commute time contribute to drowsy driving accidents?

What is Excessive Commuting and How Can It Lead to Drowsy Driving Truck Collisions?

DuPage County personal injury attorney, truck driver fatigueTruck drivers perform a very important role in our daily commerce. Without them transporting goods between destinations, our everyday lives and the flow of goods and services would be impacted. However, long haul journeys are often involved and the incidents of truck accidents do not go unnoticed.

Reports from the U.S. Department of Transportation state that close to 4,000 people are killed in large truck crashes each year. Moreover, driver fatigue is stated as a leading factor.

Motivated to drive longer in order to be paid more, tired drivers put others at risk on the roads. In 2013, there were 10,397 crashes involving tractor-trailers in Illinois alone.

DuPage County truck accident attorney, truck driver tipsOn average, nearly 4,000 people die in a semi-truck accident every year and more than 100,000 are injured—nearly 11 truck accidents each and every day. The American Trucking Association, an advocacy group for the United States trucking industry, says that about 75 percent of those accidents are inadvertently and unintentionally caused by the other driver. To improve safety and build awareness, one truck driver recently shared some safety tips with The Arizona Republic.

Understand That Semi Trucks are Different

Unlike cars, SUVs, pickup trucks, and semis are running loads that weigh hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of pounds. That weight drastically increases their stopping time—more than 360 feet (about the size of a football field) in perfect conditions, and more when the roads are wet or slick. Their sheer size only further complicates matters, making some roads extremely difficult to navigate, turns wide, and the changing of lanes or parking tricky, at best. They need more room, more time, and a lot of patience from other drivers.

b2ap3_thumbnail_Illinois-truck-accident.jpgAccording to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, the number of truck crashes and fatalities is on the rise. In 2011 alone, 3,757 died in collisions with trucks and more than 80,000 Americans were injured. Though trucks make up less than five percent of all vehicles on U.S. roadways, per mile driven, those same trucks cause fatalities at rate that is 17 percent higher than that for regular passenger vehicles.

Size of Trucks: A Contributing Factor

Along with the number of trucks on the road, the size of trucks will also increase as well. In fact, some will be longer than passenger airplanes and weigh up to 20 times more than a family car. Given the size disparity between trucks and cars, when trucks crash, most of the people who are injured or die are the occupants of the cars, motorcycles, bicycles, and even pedestrians involved, as opposed to the truck drivers themselves.
